Temple University’s graduate programs in law and education have earned strong recognition in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report rankings, showing notable improvements over the previous year. The law program ranking advanced to No. 50, up from No. 54, while the education program rose to No. 40, up from No. 48. Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) offers these programs and has consistently demonstrated excellence in both academic areas.

About Temple University and the Japan Campus
Founded in 1884, Temple University is a globally ranked, top-tier American university with the Carnegie R1 designation for highest research activity. As a public research university, Temple operates a multi-campus system extending from Pennsylvania, the U.S., as well as Rome and Japan. Established in 1982, TUJ is the oldest and largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. TUJ is fully integrated with Temple’s Main Campus in Philadelphia and is officially an accredited international branch campus of the university.
In January 2025, TUJ reached a new milestone with the grand opening of TUJ Kyoto, a multi-building satellite location in southern Kyoto City near the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Further expanding its academic offerings, TUJ Kyoto will launch the Master of Science in Communication Management in the fall 2025 semester.
Law School
The Beasley School of Law of Temple University, established In 1895 and accredited by the American Bar Association, offers comprehensive legal education in Philadelphia and globally. TUJ launched the law program in 1994, enabling juris doctor (JD) students from the U.S. to study in Japan and local students to earn American LLM degrees without leaving Japan. The school excels in trial advocacy, part-time programs, and international law, consistently earning high rankings. All courses are taught in English and LLM students study together with JD students from Temple University and other U.S. law schools who travel to Japan each spring to study abroad in Tokyo. A significant number of TUJ’s graduates have successfully passed the U.S. bar examination and become certified to practice law.
Graduate College of Education
The Graduate College of Education at TUJ has offered a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) since 1982. TUJ has also offered a doctoral program since 1988 that aims to promote research that enhances the understanding of the educational needs of English language learners. Over the last four decades, TUJ has made a significant positive impact on the world of education, not only in Japan but also globally, granting about 1,700 master’s degrees and more than 200 doctoral degrees. Graduates of the master’s and doctoral programs at TUJ have gone on to become teaching professionals at numerous Japanese high schools and prestigious universities.
