Building on its growing international presence and commitment to build bridges across cultures, the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) recently established new partnerships with the top-ranked private university in India*, O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), and the third-ranked private university in Mexico**, Universidad Anahuac Mayab (Anahauc Mayab). These cross-border collaborations involve study abroad and student exchange programs focused on Temple’s new satellite location in Kyoto, which is set to open in January 2025.
TUJ’s partnerships with JGU and Anahauc Mayab advance the globalization of higher education while cultivating excellence. These partnerships offer new global opportunities for students and faculty to take advantage of the truly international education offered at TUJ in a multicultural and inclusive environment. They come at a time when Temple Japan has been experiencing phenomenal growth in its undergraduate program and undertaking one of the most significant initiatives in its over 40-year history with the opening of a multi-building satellite in Kyoto, which functions as the base for new student exchange programs with these overseas universities.
Students from the two universities in India and Mexico will have opportunities to experience one of the most dynamic periods seen in TUJ’s history. In recent years, Temple has expanded its Tokyo campus just outside of Shibuya, introduced its world-class Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management degree, expanded its computer science program, developed an innovative student leadership initiative, launched an academic esports certificate program, and added a series of new academic programs to meet industry needs and reinforce Temple’s positions as a global academic leader.
The agreements with JGU and Anahauc Mayab will enable students and faculty from these partner universities the opportunity to spend time in Japan within a student-centered learning environment at TUJ infused with global views and intercultural perspectives. The relationships also open the door of Temple students to study at the partner institutions in key countries.
Top Anahauc Mayab business students will start arriving in Japan in January 2025, while 40 to 50 JGU students will participate in a custom-designed summer program in June 2025. The JGU program will focus on the historical development strategies that influence business and management practices in Japan. Temple Japan aims to provide JGU students with a comprehensive overview of important factors and features of Japanese business, management, and policy landscape today, while carefully acknowledging national and cultural differences.
In addition to these latest agreements with JGU and Anahauc Mayab, TUJ has actively engaged with its partners including Meiji University, Showa Women’s University, Musashi University, India’s Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technologies, and other Temple partners around the world.
For over 40 years, TUJ has excelled in building bridges between cultures and advancing the globalization of higher education in Japan. TUJ is the largest and longest-running branch campus of a foreign university in Japan and currently hosts students from about 70 different countries and regions. The Japan campus is the flagship Asian operation of Temple University in Pennsylvania, a leading public university with more than 360,000 living alumni worldwide.
At TUJ, undergraduate enrollment reached a record high of nearly 2,250 students in the spring 2024 semester. In addition to the undergraduate and graduate school programs, the university also offers non-degree programs such as Continuing Education, Corporate Education and the Academic English Program to nearly 2,000 learners on an annual basis to serve a wide range of needs of the local community. TUJ was recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and officially designated as a Foreign University Branch in 2005.
*Ranked as India’s number 1 private university by QS World University Rankings 2023, according to JGU’s website.
**Ranked as Mexico’s number 3 private university by QS World University Rankings 2023, according to Anahauc Mayab’s website.
