Astellas President Naoki Okamura delivers a lecture to students on TUJ campus

Naoki Okamura, appointed as President and CEO of Astellas Pharma Inc. on April 1, delivered a lecture on corporate finance in the pharmaceutical industry to students at the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ). The lecture was a part of Professor Akashi Hongo’s International Business Studies course, and it provided students with a rare opportunity to learn about corporate finance from the experience of a prominent business leader in Japan.

In the lecture held on March 30, 2023, Okamura walked through an annual report of Astellas, one of the leading pharmaceutical firms in Japan, and shared his experience at the company to explain the condition of the industry in Japan and elsewhere in the world. He discussed various aspects of the pharmaceutical industry, such as the challenges faced by his company, its strategies for success, and the importance of innovation and collaboration.

The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session. Students showed particular interest in the challenges faced by Astellas in the current economic and regulatory environment, and how the company is meeting these challenges. Okamura provided detailed and informative responses, sharing his vision for the company’s future and how it plans to achieve its goals.

Message from Naoki Okamura:

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to deliver this lecture at Temple University, Japan Campus.

I have been invited to a corporate finance class at Temple University, Japan Campus once every semester for more than 4 years now. The topic is “Corporate Finance in the Pharmaceutical Business – Beauties and Limitations“. Two themes particularly seemed to resonate with the students this time. One was the advantages of making corporate finance a common language of business and the other was my experience of learning from a wide range of books and trying to apply what I learnt in hands-on practice. I was pleased to receive their feedback and further questions afterward. I also felt how much VALUE the pharmaceutical industry can bring to society. I hope that connecting what they learn in the classroom to its application in the real business world will give students the opportunity to significantly shape their future.
