As the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) continues to thrive in its mission to develop global-ready students and meet their academic needs, TUJ will introduce a new Master of Science degree in Communication Management in Kyoto, starting in the fall 2025 semester. This degree, which will be held at TUJ’s new satellite location in Kyoto, is tailored for entry and mid-level professionals and can be completed in one year.

TUJ and Temple University’s prestigious Klein College of Media and Communication (Klein College) will collaborate to offer this unique master’s program. By combining the strengths of communication and management disciplines, the program aims to cultivate leaders who are not only effective communicators and strategic managers but also visionary and adaptable, able to navigate the complexities of a globalized world.

Klein College is one of the largest and most comprehensive schools of its kind in the U.S. With more than 20,000 alumni, many of whom have achieved notable success as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, broadcast executives, and prominent on-air talent, Klein College represents a significant force in media and communication education.

Studying communication and management together enables students to design innovative solutions, structure effective strategies, and craft compelling narratives that impact the bottom line. TUJ aims to develop professionals who understand the relationship between globalization, identity, branding, and culture. This program will also develop future leaders proficient in effective communication strategies and crisis management.

“Launching TUJ’s new Master of Science in Communication Management in Kyoto is a significant step in our mission to provide impactful education,” said William Swinton, assistant dean at TUJ. “Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage combined with its vibrant business environment offers a unique backdrop for our students to learn and grow. This program will not only empower them with cutting-edge communication and management skills but also prepare them to stand out as leaders in a globalized world.”

This program will be offered in a unique hybrid format, combining the flexibility of online learning with the engagement of on-campus face-to-face classes. Through the online courses, students will have access to a global network of scholars and professionals who are shaping the future of management. Simultaneously, the on-campus in-person classes will allow students to develop meaningful relationships with classmates, professors, and guest speakers. These connections will be invaluable for future career opportunities.

The 31-credit master’s program will include 12 credits of required core coursework, 18 credits in critical management courses and a final capstone project. Some of the key courses include cross-cultural leadership, leading diverse teams, and storytelling through innovation. Classes will start in August 2025. The program is designed for full-time students to complete in one year, but part-time students can take up to two years to complete the degree. Tuition will be 95,000 yen per credit, totaling 2.945 million yen for the entire program.

This Master in Communication Management degree will be the newest graduate school program offered at TUJ, joining the Graduate College of Education’s master’s and doctoral programs, the Master in Management program, and the Law program. TUJ will blend the cutting-edge prospectives of Klein College with the vibrant culture of Japan. Students will be able to experience a fusion of perspectives, preparing them to navigate a diverse cultural landscape. The Kyoto location, known as TUJ KYOTO, is close to downtown, offering students the chance to explore business life and culture in Kyoto. Career opportunities are just 30 minutes away in Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city, and nearby Kobe, the third-largest port city in Japan.

Over its more than four decades of history, TUJ has excelled in building bridges between cultures and advancing the globalization of higher education. TUJ is the largest and longest-running branch campus of a foreign university in Japan and currently hosts students from 70 different countries. The Japan campus is the flagship Asian operation of Temple University in Pennsylvania, a leading public university with more than 360,000 alumni worldwide.

At TUJ, undergraduate enrollment reached a record high of nearly 2,250 students in the spring 2024 semester. In addition to the undergraduate and graduate school programs, the university it also offers non-degree programs such as Continuing Education, Corporate Education and the Academic English Program to serve a wide range of needs of the local community.
