Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), will conduct its second annual 2-week training program on Green Economy from October 9-19 for government officials and university faculty selected by the National Development Planning Agency of Indonesia (BAPPENAS). Twenty-five participants from Indonesia will attend the tailor-made non-degree program entitled “Training of Trainers on Green Economy”. The course is particularly relevant in view of this year’s Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development with its main theme on green economy in the context of sustainable development and capacity development for institutional growth.
The program is under the Professional Human Resource Development Project, Phase III (PHRDP-III) funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as part of a Japanese ODA Loan signed by the governments of Indonesia and Japan in 2006. TUJ is currently conducting its second short-term non-degree program for BAPPENAS titled “Staff Enhancement” which educates trainees in areas such as biodiversity, conservation, and waste management.
The Green Economy course will cover a range of subjects to enhance participants’ knowledge and expertise enabling them to issue recommendations and formulate appropriate guidelines concerning Green Economy initiatives and training programs in Indonesia. The program schedule includes on-site visits to locations such as the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) Tsukuba, Chuo Incineration Plant, Minato Recycling Center, and Tokyo Bay Final Disposal Site. TUJ will be supported in this program by NIES, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Environmental Research Institute (ERI), and Mr. Remi Chandran, an environmental policy researcher at the University of Twente (Netherlands) and a Visiting Research Fellow at the United Nations University – Institute of Advanced Studies. In 2011, Mr. Chandran also taught undergraduate courses titled “Global Cities” and “Geography of World Affairs” at TUJ.

The repeat selection of TUJ by BAPPENAS highlights TUJ’s capabilities to offer quality programs and flexibility to customize contents meeting client needs. TUJ plans to further develop the number of training programs it offers to governmental organizations of foreign countries.
