Founded in 1884, Temple is a globally ranked, top-tier American university that maintains a Carnegie R1 highest research activity designation. It is a public research university that maintains a multi-campus system extending from Pennsylvania, the U.S., to Rome to Japan. Established in 1982, TUJ is the oldest and largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. TUJ is an integrated part of its Main Campus in Philadelphia and an officially accredited international branch campus of the university.

The Beasley School of Law of Temple University, established in 1895 and accredited by the American Bar Association, offers comprehensive legal education in Philadelphia and globally. In Tokyo, the law program enables students to earn LLM degrees and certificates without leaving Japan. The school excels in trial advocacy, part-time programs, and international law, consistently earning high rankings. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the program in Japan. All courses are taught in English and LLM students study together with juris doctor (JD) students from Temple University and other U.S. law schools who travel to Japan each spring to study abroad in Tokyo. A significant number of TUJ’s graduates have successfully passed the U.S. bar examination and are certified to practice law.

The Graduate College of Education at TUJ has offered a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) since 1982. TUJ has also offered a doctoral program since 1988 that aims to promote research that enhances the understanding of the educational needs of English language learners. Over the last four decades, TUJ has made a significant positive impact on the world of education, not only in Japan but also globally, granting about 1,700 master’s degrees and more than 200 doctoral degrees. Graduates of the master’s and doctoral programs at TUJ have gone on to become teaching professionals at numerous Japanese high schools and prestigious universities.
