Dr. Sergiy Korsunsky appointed as Distinguished Global Scholar and Special Advisor to the Dean
The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) will appoint Dr. Sergiy Korsunsky, former Ukrainian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan, as a Distinguished Global Scholar and Special Advisor to the Dean, effective July 1, 2025.
His appointment underscores TUJ’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to providing students with constant access to globally renowned experts who combine scholarly insight with real-world experience. Temple University faculty teaching in Japan include distinguished scholars, industry leaders, former diplomats and lawmakers and subject matter experts from around the world.
Dr. Korsunsky brings an exceptional background in both global diplomacy and academia. As Ukraine’s ambassador to Japan during the pivotal period following Russia’s invasion in February 2022 until April 2025, he played a key role in advancing Ukraine-Japan relations during a time of international crisis and uncertainty. In addition to his diplomatic career, Dr. Korsunsky is a long-time respected scholar whose academic contributions and practical expertise will enrich TUJ’s academic environment and global outlook.
Temple University and Dr. Korsunsky have built a strong collaborative relationship in recent years as the Japan campus has provided academic and financial support for Ukrainian students who were forced to flee the country due to the war. Dr. Korsunsky has been a frequent visitor to TUJ, delivering lectures, engaging with students and attending key events such as commencement and the grand opening of TUJ’s new location in Kyoto in 2025.
Dr. Korsunsky served as Ukraine’s Ambassador to Japan from 2020 to 2025. His previous roles include Ambassador to Turkey, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine, and key diplomatic roles in the U.S., Israel and within Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He holds a doctor of science degree in applied mathematics and is a distinguished economist. He is also the author of over 320 academic papers and other publications, including 10 books.
His professional expertise spans global security, strategic planning and development, including energy, trade and investment policy, energy security, science and technology. He is a well-known expert on geopolitical issues.
