Temple University is a top-tier, globally ranked public research university that maintains a multi-campus system extending from Pennsylvania (USA) to Rome to Japan. Established in 1982, TUJ is the oldest and largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. TUJ is an integrated part of its main campus in Philadelphia and an officially accredited international branch campus of the university.

TUJ offers master’s and doctoral degrees in education. It has been offering a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) for four decades. TUJ’s TESOL program supports Temple University’s institutional mission by promoting internationalization, linguistic and cultural diversity, teaching excellence, and the integration of research with teaching and learning. Many teachers and professors who teach English at Japanese high schools and universities have achieved master’s degrees in TESOL. Over the last 40 years, Temple University has issued over 1,700 master’s degrees and more than 180 doctoral degrees to students who have completed their degree studies at TUJ.

Temple’s Law School offers a year-round program at TUJ, allowing students to earn Masters of Law (LLM) degrees and certificates without the need to leave Japan.  All courses are taught in English, and LLM students study together with juris doctor (JD) students from Temple University and other U.S. law schools who travel to Japan each spring to study abroad in Tokyo.  A significant number of TUJ’s graduates have successfully passed the U.S. bar examination and are certified to practice law. Next year, the Law Program in Japan will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
