Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is holding a variety of special events the first week of November to commemorate the move this fall to its new campus on the grounds of Showa Women’s University (SWU).
Coming to Japan for the November 6 New Campus Opening Celebrations are more than 40 representatives from Main Campus, including Chair of the Board of Trustees Mitchell L. Morgan, President Richard M. Englert, and Provost JoAnne Epps. The ceremony will mark another new step forward in TUJ’s 37-year history. The Chargé d’Affaires ad interim for the U.S. Embassy in Japan, Joseph M. Young, is also scheduled to attend the ceremony. It was largely through the efforts of the U.S. Embassy that TUJ received its designation as a Foreign University, Branch Campus in Japan from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Temple University is the official education partner of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 2019 Tour of Japan
The Tour of Asia starts in Taiwan on October 31, in Japan on November 3, and then on to Korea. One of the leading orchestras in the world, the orchestra is based in Philadelphia, home of Temple Main Campus. A number of Temple graduates are members of the orchestra, and a number of orchestra members teach at Main Campus. An ensemble from the orchestra will perform at the ceremony on November 6 at Showa Women’s University Hitomi Memorial Hall, where an honorary degree will be conferred on SWU Chancellor Mariko Bando.
Forum to be held to commemorate 25th anniversary of TUJ’s law program
Founded in 1895, Temple University’s Beasley School of Law offers programs in Philadelphia, Tokyo, Beijing and Rome. The school is a leader in the field of international legal education, and it has produced a large number of excellent legal professionals who are active internationally. Accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), the school is one of the top-ranked law schools in the U.S. TUJ’s law program, which offers the Master’s Program of the Main Campus’s law school, was founded in 1994 and this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. To mark the anniversary, the school will be holding a forum and a scholarship reception on November 4.
University to hold Community Day, an American-style festival to introduce the university to the community
Since TUJ’s move to its new campus, people in the local community have had contact with the university in nearby housing or shopping areas — and have supported TUJ at this major turning point. To provide an opportunity for people in the community to come to the new campus and meet students, faculty, and staff, the university is hosting a community day on November 7. People in the community will host outdoor stalls and the university will provide entertainment including stage performances and screenings of videos produced by students. In addition, Hooter the Owl, the mascot of Temple University, will be coming to Japan from the U.S. for the first time and making a special appearance.
