Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) will hold a special art exhibition, “Design for Need” at Minato City Eco-Plaza from Monday, April 14. The artworks are based on a research theme in a freshman art course. Students observe what is required in the community and propose creative design solutions. The works, created by students with an international point of view, show their takes on environment and design. The main language of the student works is English.
Shinya B Watanabe, Associate Professor of Art, who teaches the course, says, “I would like freshman to understand the basics of social responsibility for designers, such as environmental consciousness and waste reduction. This research challenges students to think what actions designers should take for communities and for people who need design solutions.”

A message from Minato City Eco-Plaza:
We are delighted to have TUJ’s art students presenting their works in our Eco-Plaza exhibition. Our goal is to provide visitors and residents from both Japan and overseas with an opportunity to deepen their understanding toward a borderless environment in a broader perspective.
Through this exhibition, we hope the art works created by students with international backgrounds will raise awareness and interest in the environment in art and ordinary life, leading us to be aware of international environmental practices, cultures and related issues.”
About the TUJ Art Major:
TUJ’s art major is offered under the auspices of the world-renowned Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. This degree aims to cultivate the artistic sense and skills that will help students develop as artists and to work in art-related careers, such as graphic and website design. Temple University, Japan Campus was designated as the first Foreign University, Japan Campus by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2005.
