Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) will expand its academic offerings at its Kyoto location, enabling students to complete full undergraduate degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Communication Studies, Computer Science, General Studies, International Business Studies, as well as Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management (THE).

Building on increasing student demand, the TUJ Kyoto will expand its facilities for the upcoming summer semester in May, further supporting TUJ’s broader commitment to enhancing academic opportunities across Japan. As TUJ continues to grow, its Kyoto location is playing an increasingly important role in delivering globally focused, English-language education as part of an American university system in Japan.

Expanding Academic Opportunities in Kyoto

The new degree pathways are designed to align with both student interests and evolving global workforce needs.

  • Temple’s new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence will also be available in Kyoto. This program emphasizes both technical depth and applied learning.
  • Communication Studies program will offer a strong foundation in media and communication, with a particular emphasis on media production and advertising-related coursework.
  • Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management (THE) allows students to engage directly with Kyoto, one of the world’s most recognized cultural and tourism destinations, providing a unique, real-world learning environment.
  • Computer Science, one of the most popular majors at TUJ in Tokyo, will now be available in Kyoto with the opening of a new PC lab in May.
  • The General Studies program allows students to design an individualized course of study across multiple disciplines, supporting flexible and goal-oriented learning.  In addition, TUJ Kyoto will offer an associate degree (AA) in General Studies option, providing students with a flexible pathway to begin their undergraduate studies in Kyoto before continuing toward a bachelor’s degree.

Together, these programs complement the existing International Business Studies major, creating a well-rounded academic ecosystem in Kyoto.

For some programs, students may also be able to complete degree requirements through a combination of in-person courses in Kyoto and online offerings from Tokyo, offering greater flexibility in how they pursue their studies.

TUJ, the oldest and largest foreign university in Japan, is experiencing one of the most dynamic periods in its history, with rising enrollment and increasing demand for globally oriented, career-relevant programs.

The expansion of full degree programs in Kyoto reflects TUJ’s long-term vision of developing the campus into a key academic hub in the Kansai region, offering students greater flexibility in where and how they complete their education.

TUJ plans to continue expanding its academic portfolio in Kyoto, with additional programs currently under consideration. These efforts are part of the university’s ongoing commitment to innovation in education and to meeting the needs of a rapidly changing global society.
