Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) presents its 14th annual student film festival on Friday, April 12 in The Parliament Student Lounge at TUJ Azabu Hall. This year’s festival will feature nine student-produced short films from a variety of genres. The event is open to the general public and is free of charge. All films have Japanese and/or English subtitles and have been selected, edited and captioned by TUJ students as part of a Communication Studies course. The event is the second of two public film festivals being held at TUJ this Spring, after having already successfully hosted the 13th UNHCR Refugee Film Festival as a School Partner in early March.
This credit-bearing course provides students with an opportunity to comprehensively learn about event production and management. Students take part in all stages of the festival, from the call for entries, to event execution. Assistant Professor Karl Neubert has been directing and supervising this film festival since 2005 as part of the Communication Studies course. Student evaluation is based on subtitling, event planning and promotion, along with overall management. This year’s promotional campaign includes a countdown on social media (Facebook / Instagram) by TUJ students, staff and faculty.
Any member of the TUJ community (i.e., students — regardless of their major, alumni, staff and faculty) were eligible to enter the festival. The background of the filmmakers is diverse and includes those from a wide variety of countries such as the U.S., Japan, Germany, China, India, Saudi Arabia, the U.K., and the Philippines.
This year, TUJ will invite Mami Taoka, filmmaker, writer and editor, to participate as a guest judge.
