The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) hosted its first symposium on science and innovation at its new complex in Kyoto from March 13 to 15, 2025, bringing together world-class scholars from renowned universities around the globe.
The three-day event, titled “Understanding Surfaces and Interfaces: A Symposium Celebrating Seven Decades of Service” was jointly organized in collaboration with TUJ Kyoto, the Institute for Computational Molecular Science (ICMS), and the College of Science and Technology at Temple University’s main campus in Philadelphia, U.S. The ICMS plays a central role in high-performance computing for cutting-edge research.
The symposium featured internationally renowned scientist and distinguished professor, Dr. Michael L. Klein. Dr. Klein is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Laura H. Carnell* Professor of Science at Temple and Director of the Institute for Computational Molecular Science. He is the former Dean of the College of Science and Technology at Temple.
TUJ Dean Matthew Wilson commented, “It was an honor to host this symposium featuring Dr. Michael Klein, an internationally renowned scientist and distinguished Temple professor. Dr. Klein has been a driving force in advancing computational molecular science and pioneering research that has reshaped the interpretation of experiments on the structural and dynamical behavior of disordered crystals, hydrogen-bonded liquids, conducting fluids, supercooled liquids, self-assembled monolayers and lipid bilayers. As a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, his contributions to the field are truly extraordinary. We are proud to have him as part of the Temple University community.”

Alongside Klein, more than 20 scholars from universities around the world gathered at TUJ Kyoto, which officially opened in January 2025. Scholars at TUJ Kyoto hailed from Temple, Cambridge University, Yale University, Kyoto University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Freie Universität Berlin, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, National University Taiwan, University of Osaka, Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) and other top universities.
*Established in 1985 by the Temple University Board of Trustees, Laura Carnell professorships recognize faculty who have distinguished themselves in research, scholarship, the creative arts and teaching.
