Temple University, Japan Campus Launches Scholarship Programs with Partner Prefectures

The Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is strengthening its collaboration with three partner prefectural governments—Yamanashi, Nagasaki and Ehime—by introducing scholarship programs for local high school students. These initiatives build on existing partnerships that have already offered English language training for local teachers and internship opportunities for TUJ students.

As TUJ experiences one of the most dynamic periods in its more than four decades of history in Japan, its degree-seeking student body, including both undergraduate and graduate students, has exceeded 2,800 this fall semester. This growth enhanced the university’s visibility, paving the way for new collaborations with various stakeholders, including local governments.

The latest initiative, the TUJ Partnership Scholarship, is available to high school students of the three prefectures. Eligible applicants must be prospective graduates from high schools located in these regions. One student from each prefecture will be selected, with each recipient receiving a 50% tuition reduction for their first two semesters at TUJ. The total amount will amount to about 855,000 yen for each recipient. The application deadline is February 15 every year. This effort underscores TUJ’s commitment to expanding its impact on international education in Japan. It comes at a time of substantial growth, including record enrollment, the opening of a new location in Kyoto in January 2025 and collaborative agreements with these three prefectures. At the city level, TUJ also partners with Setagaya City and Minato City in Tokyo. Most recently, it signed an agreement with the Osaka Prefectural Board of Education on November 25, building on TUJ’s longstanding mission to establish bridges across cultures and advance the globalization of higher education.

Series of Initiatives

TUJ has undertaken a series of collaborative initiatives with these prefectures. This spring, the university hosted about 25 high school students from Yamanashi Prefecture for a short-term English program, following a cooperative agreement established in December 2022. This program with Yamanashi is set to continue.

With Nagasaki and Ehime Prefectures, which started the partnership in March 2024, TUJ is exploring the possibility of launching a short-term English program for high school students at its new location in Kyoto next summer. Furthermore, discussions are underway with Nagasaki on long-term internships for TUJ students in the tourism industry, while with Ehime, the university provided skill enhancement training to over 200 English teachers and assistant language teachers on November 29.  TUJ and its partner prefectures are also exchanging ideas on various initiatives to drive mutual development and benefit both the university and local communities.

About TUJ

Established in 1982, TUJ has excelled in building bridges between cultures and advancing the globalization of higher education. It is the largest and longest-running branch campus of a foreign university in Japan and currently hosts students from about 80 different countries and regions. The Japan campus is the flagship Asian operation of Temple University, a leading public university in Pennsylvania, with more than 360,000 alumni worldwide. In 2005, TUJ was recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and officially designated as a Foreign University, Japan Campus.

In addition to a wide range of undergraduate degree programs, TUJ offers non-degree programs through Academic English Program, Continuing Education and Corporate Education to serve various needs of the local community. The university also provides graduate programs, including the Graduate College of Education, Master in Management Program and the Law program. In the fall 2025 semester, TUJ will introduce a new Master in Communication Management program in Kyoto.
