TUJ Hosts Conference Focusing on International Education

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of its establishment in Japan, Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), hosted a 25th Anniversary Symposium on the theme of "International Education in Japan—A Concept in Search of Substance" at Tokyo's Roppongi Academy Hills on Saturday, November 10th. The symposium was the highlight of TUJ's 25th anniversary celebrations, with attendees from diverse fields, including educational institutions, international corporations and organizations, the media, and the general public, enjoying a highly informative and insightful afternoon of presentations and discussions.

Temple University, Japan Campus, Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, is the oldest and the largest branch campus of a foreign university in Japan. All classes are conducted in English, and TUJ follows the same curriculum and confers the same degrees and diplomas as the main campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In February 2005, TUJ became the first Foreign University, Japan Campus, recognized by Japan's Ministry of Education.

TUJ's ICJS to Host "Youth and Imaginative Labor: East Asia and Beyond" Conference

TUJ's Institute of Contemporary Japanese Studies (ICJS) will host a two-day conference on "Youth and Imaginative Labor: East Asia and Beyond," on July 21 and 22. Part of ICJS's Wakai Project, which provides a forum for addressing issues facing Japanese youth, the conference will discuss the role of young people in the rise and growing international recognition of "cool Japan", and how "freeter" culture is responding to the country's changing labor market.

Minato City Citizen's University Event at TUJ a Great Success

On three consecutive Wednesday evenings in May, TUJ held its first Citizen's University event, a series of talks by Professor Phil Deans entitled "Japan: Reform and Reaction," at TUJ Mita Hall. These talks are just one facet of TUJ's agreement with Minato City to collaborate on fostering international understanding and cross-cultural communication. The Citizen's University offers people in the local Minato City community an opportunity to learn more about what's being taught at universities in the city.

2007 Commencement Ceremony Honors 169 Graduates - Also Marks 25th Anniversary

Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), held its 2007 commencement ceremony on June 10 at Tokyo's Sheraton Miyako Hotel, recognizing the achievements of 169 graduates. The commencement also helped kick off a six-month celebration of TUJ's 25th anniversary, further adding to the festive mood.

Auction and Gala Raise ¥4.5 million for TUJ Tourism Scholarship Fund

More than 100 supporters of TUJ helped raise over ¥4.5 million at the school's first-ever "Travel Extravaganza," an auction and gala held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Tuesday, June 5. Organized by the TUJ Tourism and Hospitality Advisory Board, the auction and gala helped to raise much-needed funds to provide scholarships for students wanting to make a career in tourism and hospitality management.

TUJ's 25th Anniversary Celebrations Coming Up

TUJ celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Since being established in 1982 as Temple University's second international campus, TUJ has provided an education to approximately 31,500 students in various programs. A series of events are being planned to mark the anniversary, including a 25th Anniversary Symposium, an alumni association reception, and a series of special lectures organized by TUJ's Institute of Contemporary of Japanese Studies.

TUJ Offers English Expertise to Tokyo University of Science

TUJ's Academic Preparation Program (APP) has concluded an agreement with Tokyo University of Science to design the school's curriculum and provide English-language instruction for Tokyo University of Science graduate students. TUJ Dean Kirk Patterson and APP Director Patrick Rosenkjar met with Tokyo University of Science President Shin Takeuchi on March 13 to sign the agreement.

TUJ Student Earns First Prize in Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship Competition

TUJ student Mari Saito has won the top prize in the Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship competition sponsored by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ) for her essay "The Future of Japanese Women." Mari's essay was chosen from over 40 entries collected from students at a dozen universities. The annual competition was created to encourage and support university students interested in entering the journalism field. Mari will receive ¥500,000 as her prize.
